History of Consciously Southern

Consciously Southern has been a work in progress for the last year and a half. The journey started with Lexus finding out about the zero-waste movement and how it could save money and help the environment. She started working on a project with her Entrepreneurship class to marry her two hobbies of yarn and zero waste, only to find out through market research that it was not a viable business option for her.

Starting her next class, she came up with the idea for a better low-waste store before the COVID-19 pandemic. A low-waste store where everything was filled behind the counters in containers that were exchanged. Customers would purchase containers. Those clean containers would then be filled. The next time the customer came in with clean jars, they would exchange them for jars that had been re-cleaned by the store, for the process to start all over again. The problem with this method was sourcing the containers and teaching customers a new way of shopping which could be rather intimidating. Through more market research, Lexus found out that a low-waste store was just not an option in her area.

Enter Consciously Southern. It started out as a way to promote southern sustainability. But it has grown as a way to connect new gardeners with only a container or two of space, urban gardeners with a small veggie patch, to homesteaders with acres to roam. Consciously Southern does this by showing container and urban gardening, and how to use things from the garden in the kitchen. We even like to talk about eco-swaps in the home. Enter September of 2020, Consciously Southern’s team has grown thanks to an Advanced Social Media class and some new and old friends. Our mission before November 30 of 2020 is to have 250 followers on Instagram, 100 subscribers to our Consciously Southern Podcast, and 100 hits on our blog.

The goal of Consciously Southern is to empower people who might not have known how to grow a plant or cook an egg, but they want to reduce their footprint and are now learning how. They may have what some would consider ‘stupid questions’ like how to dry herbs, but Consciously Southern had those same ‘stupid questions’ and wants to help. From kitchen swaps to how to reuse coffee grinds, Consciously Southern want’s all your questions and to empower you with the knowledge that you can do something to help lower your eco-footprint, grow your own food, and eat healthy good food in season (and out of season if you want to learn to preserve food). We’ll even teach you how to save your own seeds to replant again next year.
